Visit: General Information

We thank you for your interest!

  • Visits are free of charge

  • A group must consist of at least 10 people

At first, the group will have time to visit our exhibition. Afterwards, there will be a presentation about deep geological storage in Opalinus Clay.

The presentation will be adjusted to your group (high schools, universities, specialists, etc.).

The group will then be equipped with hard hats, reflective vestes, location badges and be driven into the tunnel. Our laboratory is located at the security tunnel, next to the Mont Terri highway tunnel. The site is located about 1 km (0.5 mile) inside the mountain.

Currently there are 45 experiments running at our rock lab. Our guide will introduce you (i.a.) to the following experiments: gas-movement in the rock, diffusion, ancient bacteria living in the rock, nuclear waste disposal, CO2 storage and seismic events.

Estimated duration: 2.5 hours (15 min exhibition visit, 45 min presentation, 15 min transfer, 75 min rock laboratory visit).

The average temperature in the lab is 14°C / 57°F (also in summer).

Please bring the following with you:

  • Jacket or sweater that will keep you warm.

  • Trekking shoes or similar for safety reasons.

We are looking forward to your visit!

Groups of 10 and more are eligible for visits

Please choose an organisation to book your visit, which will only matter for the Q&A.
